We have relatives in town for the weekend, and while I'm totally intending to be sociable, most of them are currently asleep in various places and I'm at loose ends. So:
Given that I need something to do when I'm not studying for the bar or watching Entourage, and given that I'm exiled to Portland for the next month (to be fair, it's not an unpleasant exile per se), I've been reading a lot. Here are capsule reviews without major spoilers (although there's the odd plot detail).
( The Midnighters, by Scott Westerfeld )( The Skull Cage Key by Michel Marriot )( Dragonhaven, by Robin McKinley )( Passage, by Lois McMaster Bujold )( A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith )( All the Fishes Come Home to Roost, by Rachel Manija Brown )( The Village Bride of Beverly Hills, by Kavita Daswani )That's most of it, anyway - at least what wasn't a re-read and what was memorable enough to come to mind. I should also mention, that I'm trying libraries now. I've learned that I can go on-line, search for books on my Amazon wishlist, and have the library system put them on hold and deliver them to my local branch for pick-up. It's revolutionary. I'm thrilled.
I also read a couple of those books above on my new Kindle, if you're wondering how that's going. It's actually pretty great. It feels mostly like reading a regular book and has tons of advantages in terms of storage and access. There's only one major downside, which is not one I ever would have thought of before ordering, which is that you lose a major locational feature of the book. You know where and when you're reading it, of course, but the shape and size and feel are all the same as all the other books you read on the kindle. It's not a deal breaker, but it is an odd bit of lost data that doesn't affect the book itself, but does affect how you remember it, kind of.
And in related items, who else is excited about
Victory of Eagles being released next week? I'm debating whether I should order it on Amazon or try to pick it up in the bookstore. It's cheaper on Amazon, but do I want to have it on the release day itself?
